Friday, May 2 - Breakfast

8:00 am - 9:00 am Breakfast served at the Dining Hall building located at the International Peace Garden. Catered by Prairie Wind Catering.

Menu: Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Biscuits, Hash Browns, Orange and Apple Juice/Coffee/Milk. ($6.00)

There are no other prepared meal options on the grounds of the International Peace Garden, so make sure to register for this meal on your registration form.

Conference Registration

Registration will be held at the Burdick Performing Arts Center located at the International Peace Garden. Registration table open from Friday 9 am - 3 pm and Saturday 8 am - 1 pm.

Educational Sessions

Educational sessions on Friday and Saturday will be held at the Burdick Performing Arts Center, located at the International Peace Garden. (Handicap Accessible) Refreshments will be available during the sessions on Friday and Saturday. Sponsored by Pepsi - Bottineau, ND.

Press Conference
ND's 3 Most Endangered Historic Properties

9:30 am - 10:00 am Press Conference announcing "ND's 3 Most Endangered Historic Properties" list and the "Preservation Success Story Award" for 2008. Held at the Historic CCC Lodge located at the International Peace Garden. Sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. (open to the public)

Historic CCC Lodge Craftsman Tour

10:00 am - 11:00 am Tour of Historic CCC Lodge at the International Peace Garden. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) constructed several structures within the garden in the 1930s. The most majestic of these structures is the Historic Lodge built in 1939. This rustic lodge is 105 feet long with a 60-foot wing built from North Dakota granite and Duck Mountain Timber; the building features two impressive fireplaces. It was listed on ND's 3 Most Endangered Places list in 2007, come and see the restoration work in progress! View images of the site work that has occurred to date on the project. A discuss first hand the ins and outs of the work completed to date. Tour is guided by Dean Poll "Cabin Timber". Sponsored by the International Peace Garden. (Handicap accessible)

Our Garden: The History of the International Peace Garden
9:30 am – 11:00 am Douglas Hevenor, Learn about the history of the garden and the recently acquired information concerning the International Peace Garden's founder Mr. Henry Moore. The presentation will include historic photographs and information about what the future has in store for the Peace Garden. Sponsored by the International Peace Garden.

Achieving Heritage Designation, MB and Writing a National Register Nomination, ND
9:30 am – 11:00 am Suzzanne Kelley, Edward Ledohowski and Susan Quinnell Questions about the National Register or Heritage Designation? Ask the experts! We'll walk you through the process and how it benefits historic buildings on both sides of the border. Learn how the process differs and how it is

11:00 pm - 11:50 pm Quarterly meeting of Preservation North Dakota's Board of Directors. Held in the meeting room at the Dining Hall located at the International Peace Garden.

Concurrent Afternoon Events

International Peace Garden Walking Tour
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm Walking tour will take people through the garden to see the different CCC structures located on the grounds as well as the other various structures added to the property over the years. The CCC work was completed during the 1930's and still stands today as a legacy of President Roosevelt's nationwide work program developed during the “Great Depression.” Tour guide is Douglas Hevenor. Sponsored by the International Peace Garden. (Tour leaves from the Burdick Performing Arts Center, please wear suitable shoes and attire)

Local Affiliate Meeting
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm Meet Preservation North Dakota's affiliates from across the state. Meeting will be held in the Burdick Performing Arts Center located at the International Peace Garden. Take part in a discussion on current preservation issues. Hear success stories, share ideas and solve problems. Meet with members of the PND Board of Directors. Help define the future of this popular program. Moderator is Marilu Person, Affiliate Coordinator – Preservation North Dakota.

Boissevain, MB Historic District Bus/Walking Tour
(Bring your passport or two forms of ID for customs)
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm The Boissevain historical buildings tour consists of twenty one historic buildings
including thirteen homes, five businesses and three churches. It includes; stone, brick and wood-frame
buildings and includes many different building styles. Highlights include St. Paul's United Church an
integral part of the Boissevain skyline, and the Land Titles Office built in 1903 which originally served
as a Land Titles Office for the southwest region of Manitoba. Sponsored by the Turtle Mountain -
Souris Plains Heritage Association. (Bus transportation will be available, meet at Burdick Perform-
ing Arts Center located at the International Peace Garden) (Not all buildings are handicap accessible)

Prairie Churches of North Dakota Tour
(Bring your passport or two forms of ID for customs)
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm The tour includes four prairie churches:

Historic Salem Lutheran Church: located on the Turtle Mountain, built in 1914 and moved to its current location in 1939. The church closed in 1972.

Historic Emmanuel Lutheran Brethren Church: located in the foothills of Bottineau County, built in 1905 and closed in 1995. The church has been kept up, repairs being done as needed.

Historic Swedish Lutheran Church: built of fieldstone, built in 1903. In 1915 it had a membership of 28 families, but closed in 1938. Since it closed it has been used for baptism, weddings and funerals. The church is maintained by local families, and remains open to serve its purpose to anyone who passes by in need.

Historic Zion Lutheran Church: ND's oldest “closed” church – closed in 1917, which has been preserved and holds occasional heritage services.

The Tour will also stop at Mystical Horizons a scenic byway attraction.

Mystical Horizons: located on the Western edge of the Turtle Mountains on the second highest elevation in the Turtle Mountains, this 21st Century Stonehenge is a solar equinox and solstice observation viewpoint and scenic overlook.

“Progress In Preservation”
6:00 pm – 7:30 pm Dinner catered by Prairie Winds Catering at the Errick Willis Pavilion located at the International Peace Garden. Update on regional preservation issues, highlighting recent accomplishments and what the future holds; as well as challenges facing the historic preservation movement:

Ian Hall, Municipal Liaison Officer, Historic Resources Branch - Manitoba Culture, Heritage and Tourism
